The United Nations voted in support of the idea of having a worldwide moratorium on the Death Penalty. [December, 2007].
In Dec. of 2007, the state of New Jersey ended its Death Penalty program in favor of life in prison without parole.
The U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments on whether or not death by lethal injection is in violation of the Constitution as "cruel and unusual punishment." [April, 2006].
California Commission on the Fair Administration of Justice. CA is reviewing its criminal justice system, focusing on: wrongful convictions, DP system's lack of solid DNA testing, better training for judges, lawyers and detectives working DP cases, and how unreliable the testimony of jailhouse informants is. The commission will submit its findings by the end of 2007.
The American Bar Association wants a moratorium, temporary halt of executions while fairness of the DP system can be studied and improved upon.

A bill has been proposed which partly focuses on better funding for indigent defenses (state appointed lawyers for those who can't afford a lawyer). It's called Advancing Justice through DNA Technology Act (S. 1700/H.R. 3214).
A bill has been proposed by Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI) which would start a moratorium on DP cases (stopping the DP while it's studied for fairness regarding legal representation). It's called National Death Penalty Moratorium Act (S. 132).
